Divisive Study for Divisive Ends
Wednesday 30 July 2008

British Muslim students have long contributed to the success of Britain. Muslim students have gone on to become doctors, business people and public servants, and all have been part of making Britain the vibrant society that it is today. 'Islam on Campus' a survey published on Sunday that supposedly charts UK student opinion is silent on this, just as it is silent on seeking positive good practise examples of British Muslims reaching out, seeking the common good.

The latest report on British Muslim students by the Centre for Social Cohesion serves only to strengthen bigots and demagogues keen to sow discord amongst British people. The authors of the report cannot hide behind a purportedly scientific survey to justify their own agenda of creating anything but cohesion in society. We refer to more concrete polling data that illustrate the commitment British Muslims have to British society and the people around them. The authors cite their unsatisfactory sampling to extrapolate ideological and biased conclusions to serve their own divisive ends.

We are a cross-section of British people who believe in the importance of meaningful social cohesion, where British people from all backgrounds and persuasions can live together without maligning each other. The Centre for Social Cohesion is opposed to this, and we reject their conclusions utterly.

We do not deny that the terror threat is serious, nor do we object to the notion that separatism and bigotry should be challenged, including from within the Muslim community. However the report incorrectly ascribes guilt by tenuous association with those national Muslim organisations who have been firm and innovative on both counts. Moreover, these organisations are theologically diverse, and yet the study insinuates that they favour one Islamic tradition over another.

The report reserves a lot of its fire for the Islamic student societies that operate from campus up and down the country. We find it curious, therefore, that the report sough qualitative opinions from only twelve Islamic student societies, yet there are scores of Muslim student bodies in the UK -- hardly a representative sample. Islamic societies have done much to engage Muslim students with the mainstream. The study could have cited, for example, those Islamic societies that worked in partnership with those Jewish student societies to bring about greater understanding.

A report like this can only create discord amongst us. It has already done so with incendiary headlines such as 'Muslim students back killings'. Muslim students do not back killings, they are not separatist, they are British and very much part of our vibrant society.

9- The Video Quilt Project - Deadline August 15, 2008
PHASE 2 - THE VIDEO QUILT PROJECT
Stitching together voices for Palestine
Make your voice heard!

BACKGROUND

For 60 years the Palestinian refugees' right to return to their land and homes of origin has been under attack from various forces that wish to rewrite the past and dictate the present and future of Palestine and its people. Despite these attacks, for 60 years Palestinians and their supporters around the world have remained steadfast in not just supporting this right, but demanding and asserting that it is a right that must be implemented if justice and real peace are to be achieved. These voices unfortunately have all too often been deliberately muffled and fragmented ... It's time to collect these voices -- literally.

GOAL

On this the 60th year of the Nakba, we are collectively creating a Video Quilt to demonstrate that among Palestinians and their many supporters there remains a strong united voice for the Palestinian people's Right to Return to their homes and lands of origin.

PHASE 1

An 8-minute film, which represented a sampling of what had been collected so far as part of the Video Quilt Project, premiered at the 6th Annual Al-Awda Convention, May 16-18, 2008. This Video Quilt has been posted online at YouTube and may be viewed at:
http://www.al-awda.org/video_quilt1.html

PHASE 2

We are now in the process of gathering messages for an extended version of the Video Quilt which we intend to show at various exhibits and venues over the next year. These short messages will include those recorded at the 6th Annual Al-Awda Convention from keynote speakers and other participants, as well as those we receive by Friday August 15, 2008.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

In order to create this second edition of the Video Quilt, we need your help. We are asking for video submissions from around the world with SHORT MESSAGES supporting the right to return. We are looking for messages from:
* Refugees (individuals and groups) affirming they have the right to return or that they WILL return
* Activists and individuals from around the world (every continent) supporting the right to return
* Famous personalities supporting the right to return
All messages must be brief -- they should be just one or two short sentences, and these will be "stitched" together and edited to make a short exhibition video on the international support for the right of return.

Videos should be submitted by August 15, 2008 in mini-DV, DVD, or VHS format. For more tips and info visit:

12- Denmark: Muslim groups to file suit against Prophet cartoons - Aug
01-08-2008

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, (Agencies): Seven Muslim organisations will file suit in Denmark's highest court against newspaper editors who in 2005 first published controversial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), one of the groups said yesterday.

"We believe that Muslims have been treated unjustly and that is why we want to take this case before the Supreme Court," Assaad Bilal, a spokesman for one of the organisations, said.

The groups, which are all based in Denmark, have until August 14 to appeal two lower court rulings against them.

"We have asked our lawyer, Michael Havemann, to ask the Justice Ministry to have our case tried in the Supreme Court," Bilal said.

They wanted "the harshest possible penalty" for the Jyllands-Posten daily's former chief editor Carsten Juste and culture editor Flemming Rose, he added.

Subject: BrassTacks urgent alaert -- Our website closed down by US government !!!

Dear all,

Assalam alaikum.

Alhamdolillah and shukar in all tests and trials. I have just been informed by our webmaster that US government has forced the site hosting server to close down our site and now www.brasstacks.pk is no more available for the time being. We had taken some space on a third party server in US but it seems that it was not so good idea.

We will be reverting back to our old mailing list as for now our site blog and mailing list would not be functional.

We are in process of shifting it to another server, in Pakistan this time, but may loose some data like mailing list or videos which were uploaded. Please bear with us and remember us in your dua always.

These kind of reactions were always expected though we never thought they would come so soon :)) so much for their "freedom of media and information". :)))

Khair inshallah and Wassalam

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Joint Research Project
Azerbaijan 2025: Strategic Outlook of the Country
The Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) is launching a joint research fellowship program for the years of 2008-2010.
This project aims to create a model for Azerbaijan’s sustainable development while researching its competitive advantage.  It takes the year 2025 as a benchmark when country’s major oil resources are expected to deplete.  We plan to develop various scenarios attempting to examine the strategy which will shape Azerbaijan of that time.  Scenarios considered as outcome of the project may be utilized for academic discussion and/or policy application.
Framework of the project includes, but is not limited to, five major fields of study that are considered vital for strategy formulation and building competitive advantage. ADA recognizes that there are other important issues and challenges deserving attention. However, due to the resource and time limitations, they are not included in this phase of the project. ADA will focus on five fields of study outlined in this call, but reserves the right to add to or amend existing list.

A potential candidate must have a PhD or equivalent in experience.  Affiliation with a research/educational institution is NOT required.
Depending on their expressed commitment, ADA will grant competitive fellowships to selected candidates.  Fellows are free to attract additional funding but with a prior consent of ADA.
Those who wish to apply must fill in the attached application form and submit it to ADA electronically at faliyev@ada.edu.az by August 31, 2008.  Incomplete applications or those received after the deadline will not be considered.  The results of the selection process will be announced by September 15, 2008.
Any further queries may be sent to Mr. Fuad Aliyev at: faliyev@ada.edu.az.
